Stewardship

My role in the stewardship of a congregation is central because as the sole or senior minister, I am a vision-holder. I must be a consistent and constant promoter of congregational life and vitality. Therefore, my role is to uphold the financial stewardship of a congregation through engaging the subject head-on and without flinching. I will preach compellingly about financial stewardship, I will have a large role in stewardship drives and capital campaigns, I will ask big donors for money myself, asking them to dig deeper than they planned. I will engage discussion about the sometimes taboo subject of money wherever I can. Then I will put my money where my mouth is, tithing to the congregation myself.

The minister is often the holder of a vision, the keeper of the institutional memory of an institution, and the person most capable of promoting its well-being. The maintenance of buildings, excellence in staffing, and dynamic ministries, are all an important part of the minister and congregation's shared vision. The role I desire in the congregation is one that boldly affirms and promotes stewardship at all levels of congregational life.
